Athletics

Northwood Middle School is a member of the Fox Valley Conference. We field one team for each of the team sports listed below. A $75 fee is assessed for participation in the sport. All participants are required to have a current physical on file in the nurse’s office.

Sports Available at Northwood:

Fall
• Cross-Country – 6th, 7th, and 8th grade -
Cross Country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. Our courses are 1.5-2 miles long, may include surfaces of grass, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills. It is both an individual and a team sport, runners are judged on individual times and a points scoring method for teams. Both boys and girls compete in cross country, which takes place during the fall and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures.
• Girls’ Volleyball – 7th and 8th grade 
 
Winter
• Boys’ Basketball – 7th and 8th grade
Northwood Middle School competes in the very competitive Fox Valley Conference for 7th and 8th grade boy’s basketball.  The season consists of try-outs, practicing six days a week, 11 “A” and “B” games, and a conference tournament at the end.  Fundamentals and team defense is stressed in preparation for being a part of the Woodstock North Basketball Program.
• Girls’ Basketball – 7th and 8th grade
Northwood Middle School competes in the very competitive Fox Valley Conference for 7th and 8th grade girl’s basketball. The season consists of try-outs, practicing six days a week, 11 “A” and “B” games, and a conference tournament at the end.  Fundamentals and team defense is stressed in preparation for being a part of the Woodstock North Basketball Program.
• Wrestling – 6th, 7th, and 8th grade
Northwood offers wrestling to its 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  It is one of the few sports/activities where all grade levels can participate together as one team!  Our team consists of first time beginner wrestlers to State Champions that have been wrestling for years.  If interested contact Coach Burkoth for further information. 
• Cheerleading – 7th and 8th grade
Cheer leading is open to 7th and 8th grade students wishing to cheer on the NWMS basketball teams.  Tryouts are in September and 10 students from each grade level are selected.  Basketball games are after school and cheerleaders go to away games and participate in the Fox Valley Cheer Exhibition event.  The game season runs from November to December.  Students must have a physical to attend the tryout training camp and tryouts.
• Pom Pons – 7th and 8th grade
Poms is an active and fun way for girls in 7th and 8th grade to show school spirit. Tryouts are held in September where a group of 7th and 8th grade girls are chosen to represent the Northwood Middle School Poms Squad. They perform at halftime during the boys basketball A games. At the end of the year they also showcase their dance at an Exhibition.
Spring
• Track – 6th, 7th, and 8th grade
Track and Field is open for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  There are no try-outs or cuts, so all students are welcome to join.  Track and Field consists of field events (shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump and high jump) and running events (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, hurdles and relays).  Students will have the opportunity to try all the different events and then focus on the ones they enjoy the most.  Students will compete against all the middle schools in the Conference. 

Athletics - Intramurals
Students at Northwood Middle School may, at times, have the option of participating in intramural sports as well.  The fee for intramurals is $40.00 per sport and a physical is not required.
• Boys Intramural Basketball
This league is designed for 6th/7th/8th grade middle school boys interested in improving their basketball skills while playing competitive games during November/December.   Teams will be created weekly with Northwood Middle School students.  Coaches will have the option of having a tournament at the end of the time as well as a pizza party.
• Girls Intramural Basketball
This league is designed for 6th/7th/8th grade middle school girls interested in improving their basketball skills while playing competitive games during January/February/March.   Teams will be created weekly with Northwood Middle School students.  Coaches will have the option of having a tournament at the end of the time as well as a pizza party.
